Our Love Story
The Beginning of Ed and Millie
A Night in Makati: The Encounter
In 1996, Makati, Manila, at around 2AM, I had just wrapped up a deejay set at a club whose name escapes me now. What I do remember, however, is this American Diner nearby—a place that has since closed its doors. After my sets, it became a tradition for me to indulge in a burger and French fries. I liked this diner because of a waitress, known to everyone as “Sunshine” or “Shine.” She always went the extra mile, getting me extra cheese on my burger and more fries, and I always made sure to tip her generously.
Late Night Rituals and Unexpected Encounters
As closing time approached, the diner staff would play dance music. On this night, I noticed a slim girl with long black hair dancing with her considerably tall friend, who was quite loud. I tried not to stare, but her beauty was stunning and her friend was really loud. Months prior, I had sworn off getting involved with Filipinas—a story for another time. Sunshine, ever the matchmaker, often attempted to introduce me to her friends from the province. This time, she picked up on my attempts not to stare, but this girl definitely wasn’t from the province.
First Impressions
I wasn’t exactly in the best shape to make an impression. My body was sweaty, my suit wrinkled, and the lingering scents of Marlboro Reds and San Miguel Super Dry clung to me. The free drinks from my unpaid deejay gig left me a bit drunk, and I hoped the burger would soak up some of the alcohol. It did not.
An Unexpected Introduction
To my surprise, Shine called the girl over. Even more shocking, Millie chose to sit right beside me. We both tried to play it cool, neither wanting to show our cards. What stood out most was Millie’s strength and determination; she had clear plans for her life and was intent on realizing her dreams. The details of our conversation have faded, but I remember we talked beyond closing. I never finished my burger. To this day, thirty years later, we still talk about everything and nothing in much the same way. Meeting Millie marked the end of my loneliness and the beginning of us.
