When we visited places like Digos and Lake Sebu, I saw communities creating beauty from what they already had. In Digos, people built homes using natural materials around them. In Lake Sebu, I witnessed the artistry of the T’boli people — weaving T’nalak cloth by hand and creating garments from banana fibers with so much patience, passion, and intention. And yet, despite the amount of work, heritage, and soul poured into these crafts, the question people often ask is, “Why is it expensive?” rather than appreciating the story and effort behind it. Honestly, I’m guilty of that too. I also buy imported products. But through these experiences, I realized that there can be balance. Supporting local doesn’t mean rejecting everything foreign; it simply means learning how to value our own as well.

That’s when I understood that our family trips were never just vacations. They became opportunities to immerse ourselves in culture, to learn from different communities, and to recognize that their craftsmanship is not just art — it is also livelihood, identity, and legacy. Seeing it firsthand in Lake Sebu made me realize how many talented Filipino craftsmen remain unseen because people focus more on the price than the process. And so, this idea for my debut was born together with my mom. I wanted this celebration to feel intentional and meaningful. Even in the smallest way, I thought it would be beautiful if people could add a personal touch to their outfits — maybe through something handmade or something that reflects Filipino culture — because I believe fashion can also tell stories. I was also very happy that we met a T’boli man who not only spoke beautifully about his culture but truly embodied it. You could see the pride, passion, and authenticity in the way he shared the beauty of their traditions.

For this birthday, I didn’t just want people to remember the event because of the food or the setup. I wanted them to leave carrying something deeper in their hearts. Usually, when we attend celebrations, we ask, “What was served?” or “How grand was it?” But I hope that after this, people realize that our intentions, no matter how small, can create impact. By supporting local communities, artisans, and brands, we help preserve culture while also helping provide livelihood. I think this value was shaped by so many influences in my life — from being Filipino, from admiring Catriona, from watching my mom appreciate Filipino cinema, and from hearing my dad play Original Pilipino Music at home. Those little things quietly planted seeds in me, and over time, they grew into the vision I have for this birthday.

And if ever Catriona were to see this, I honestly wouldn’t call it a “Catriona-inspired” debut because I still have my own identity. No one can ever replicate her, and that’s not my intention. Rather, she became a source of inspiration — someone who encouraged me to embrace culture, purpose, and intentionality. This celebration is really a blend of what she values and what I personally value as well.

Because for me, birthdays don’t have to be extravagant to be meaningful. Whether grand or simple, what truly makes a celebration beautiful is the heart behind it. And if there’s one thing I hope people remember from this debut, it’s that when we celebrate with intention, we also create space to honor culture, uplift communities, and proudly carry the beauty of being Filipino.
